tribander replied to your post: Time to learn how to swim!

Let me know who is running the clinic. My friend was doing one of them…not sure if he is now. I belong to the parks and Rec. It’s no asphalt green, but it’s cheap. The Chelsea center has the best pool. NO FRILLS!!!

The Chelsea pool is exactly where I’m going today to get a membership. It is like 6 blocks from my work, so maybe I’ll actually use it! :)

I’ll be looking for recaps of this training.. I’m really curious. For a pool swim I’ve been told 5 min for 400m is really really fast. My goal time for the 400m is 10 or 12.

If what you’re telling me is true, then with the current, I’m probably looking at 35-minutes?

I’ll definitely be sure to keep everyone in the loop.

Expect my recap to look something like this:

Oh god! What did I get myself into? I’m a horrible swimmer. Am I allowed to wear those floaty armband thingies?

Honestly, as I said before, time barely matters to me. I just want to finish this race so I can see if I even care enough about triathlons to bother training for a half-ironman. I always had it in my head that I might want to do one of those, but it just seems like it would take so much time to prepare… Not sure that I’m ready for that commitment, or that I care to make it.

Time to learn how to swim!

Well, it is about just shy of 6-weeks until the New York City Triathlon and I’ve decided it is prudent that I learn how to swim. To be fair, I know the basics of swimming, but really have barely done it since I got fat when I was a kid. Something about growing man-boobs as a young teenager seemed to turn me off to the prospect of taking my shirt in front of others. Weird, I know.

I’ve signed up for 3-sessions of the Jack Rabbit Open Water Swim Workshops. I figure it would be wise that I learn what is going to happen to me on July 8th when the gun goes off and the countless droves of swimmers plunge into the murky, nasty depths of Hudson River. From what I hear, the current basically will drag you from the start to the finish, so my main goal is to learn to swim well enough to survive for the 25-minutes or so that it should take to finish the mile swim.

Honestly, I have no idea how long it takes to swim that distance, current or no. It could be longer or shorter. Regardless, I need a crash course in not-drowning. So for the next 3 weekends I’ll be at Brighton Beach learning the essentials.

I’m also looking into a group of NYC community recreation centers, many of which seem to have pools available. They are only $150 a year, which for NYC is a crazy deal. This would give me access to about a dozen different pools in the city (not to mention couple dozen other centers without pools), so that is pretty amazing as well.

At this point my goals need to be realistic. Train myself well enough to survive the brick. I know I can do the bike and run separately, I just need to practice doing them in succession. My hope is that since the last 1/2 of the bike is essentially downhill or flat, that I won’t have too many issues. However, as I learned last fall when I completed my first duathlon, these things can be tricky.

I’m going to need to put together a small brick training plan for June. I need to get myself to complete at least 6 brick training sessions before the triathlon, just to make sure I’m not too off balance during the race.

My big concern right now is the swim though. If I can get myself access to a pool for some lap sessions (2x per week for 5 weeks?) and the open water swims, I should be alright. Couple those with the brick training and my everyday biking and 3x weekly running, I should be alright.

I’m always rushing training at the end. While I’m definitely just doing the NYC Triathlon to finish, it would be nice to at least finish feeling good, as opposed to how awful and negative I felt after the duathlon.

Last chance workout(s) here I come!

Just finished a group of 30-second sprints at about a 6:00 pace. Crossfit happens next.

Can someone turn the air conditioner on outside? This heat is almost too brutal for running fast.

Did a short run in DC this morning.

We started out at around 9am, with the goal of putting down about 5 miles. Nothing too crazy, we just thought it would be nice to run down to the national mall and see the sites, while running. The plan worked out great and included each of us running up and down the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, while the other took pictures.

As we got on toward mile 4 at the Jefferson Memorial, we decided that running is overrated and site seeing should be done at a slower pace, so we called the run early. It is definitely nice that I’m not yet training for Chicago, so I don’t have to meet a milage goal quite yet.

I will say this, if you’re in DC and need to run the National Mall is a fantastic place to do it. There is a plethora of different places to see and the sights are quite diverse. I highly suggest running around the pond/lake in front of the Jefferson Memorial / Washington Monument. It is a fantastic place to run; very peaceful.

  • 5/25: 239.6

Total change: -6 lbs

6 pounds in 7 days, I’ll take it!

So far this round of the 4n4challenge has been going great. I’ve been continuing my healthy paleo eating habits and the weight has just started to fall off this week. To be fair, I started eating better 2.5 weeks prior, but wasn’t seeing much weight change at the time. I was however seeing a bunch of changes in how my clothes fit. I think this last week, my weight has started to catch up with the shape changes that were in effect already.

I’m really happy with the progress so far and am on track not only to lose the 10 pounds for the 4n4challenge, but also to get into the 220s by the triathlon. My ultimate goal is to be as close to the 200s as possible by Chicago and I’m certain I’m finally back on the right track.

The great thing is that even though everyone around me thinks I’m crazy for eating the way I am, I don’t feel like I’m sacrificing anything. I love the food that I am eating and I am constantly eating as much of it as possible. To me it is as simple as following my hunger, but being conscious about what foods I am filling that hunger with.

I’ll be dark on the scale front until Tuesday, as I’m going to Washington DC with Lauren for the weekend. She found us a cool paleo restaurant to try while we’re there, so hopefully my eating stays mostly on track. Regardless, I’m going to avoid the normal junk I tend to eat when I travel and just keep eating lots of the good stuff. I don’t plan on being perfect, but this will be a very good challenge to see how closely to my plan I can stay, when I’m out of my comfort zone.

Almost halfway there.

My energy levels were so bad last night that I crashed out at 10pm and slept till 8am this morning. Funny, because I ate more food yesterday than I have in quite a while. One of my snacks was an entire package of turkey lunch meat …
